It is often considered a great American Pastime because it was invented here. It is of the nature of the game that there is a certain amount of limitlessness to it. There is no time limit. There are so many variables to the game. What will the pitcher throw? What will the batter do? Will he bunt or swing away? The game can go on forever until a winner is determined in the last at bat. It is an amazing game to play and to watch.

A good example of that was last nights High School baseball game. It was 4-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning (last inning of play in HS ball). The home team came from behind to score 4 runs and tie the game. It was pouring rain and the field was getting sloppy. Both teams were stranding base runners and no body could seem to get the key hit at the right time to score the winning run. Then in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs and the bases loaded someone hit a hard ground ball down the line to score the winning run. The fans cheered, the players celebrated a hard fought victory in the rain. The defeated team sought refuge in the dugout while their coach applauded their effort on the field in such miserable weather. It was a great game to watch.

But do these factors make baseball the greatest game? Sure it is a great game with over 150 years of history, but there are other sports with as much history just a many elements that make them a great game as baseball. But the best of those has to be golf.

So what does baseball have to do with great golf? There are many similarities between the two sports. But in my opinion golf beats out baseball and all others as the truest test of a persons toughness and willingness to persevere to the end.

To be continued.

Tiger's Best Nike Commercial Ever

Everyone today is talking about this new Nike commercial that features the voice of Tigers father Earl. After viewing the commercial I must admit that it did creep me out a little bit. But if you listen to what is being said it makes more sence.

However, I would like to point out one thing. Of all the commercials that Tiger has done, the one featured below is my favorite by far.

I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent bouncing that little white ball on the face of my wedge. I did it everyday it seemed, any free moment. And I thought I was pretty good at it. I mean I could keep it going for quite a while.

But when I saw this commercial for the first time it demolished any thought that I was good at doing the bouncing ball trick. I concede to Tiger.

The Birth of the Fist Pump

When was the birth of the fist pump? When did Tiger Woods first make this signature celebration his own?

Some might say it was in the 1994 US Amateur at the TPC at Sawgrass when he uncorked the fist pump on the famous 17th green in the final match after making a big putt to take the lead in the match for the first time with one hole to play. Tiger had come from behind to win after trailing in the championship match by 4 holes after the morning 18 holes of the 36 hole match and was down 5 with 12 holes to play in the match. At the famous Island Green 17th at TPC Tiger holed the 14 footer from just off the green and the fist pump soon followed.

But how many fans were really watching Tiger at that stage of his career? So I believe that the fist pump truly became Tigers signature expression when he holed a 35 foot eagle putt on the 29th hole to cut the lead to 3 holes in the 1996 US Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club and then another 35 foot birdie putt to tie the match on the 35th hole with one to play. Tiger was once again down by 5 holes in this match as he was in 1994 and again came from behind to win in extra holes.

Which is it? Take your pick, but I have to say it was here in Oregon at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club where Tiger Woods made the fist pump one of the more recognizable and exciting celebrations in golf.

Greatest Masters Moments

The Masters golf tournament has had its share of spectacular moments over the last 76 years. From Single shots to amazing final rounds, The Masters has provided some of the greatest moments in all sports.

Grat shots by players with the tournament on the line. Tigers amazing chip in at the 16th hole in the 2005 Masters, Larry Mizes chip in to beat Greg Norman in the 1987 Masters, the tee shot by Jack Nicklaus on the 16th hole in the 1986 Masters and "The Putt" at the 17th to take the lead in the 1986 Masters.

If you were not around to watch Nicklaus and Palmer in their primes then you missed some of the best golf ever played and crowds that were the equal to Tigers today. A 65 on Sunday is good but it has become fairly common place for Tiger. But how the 65 came about and what took place on the famous 16th at Firestone will go down in our collective memories as one of his better final round efforts.

Yes, I know he has had better rounds on Sunday. But it was the theatre and just how it happened that made it so very cool. Started 3 shots back on Sunday and by the 4th hole Tiger had come all the way back to tie it and by 9 had a 2 shot lead. Then he gives it back with back to back bogies to trail by one going into the 16th hole.

At that point I was thinking Tiger was in trouble and then he does it again. A 178 yard 8 iron? Over Water? To 1 foot? Oh come on, this cannot be real! This man does things with a golf club that no man should be able to do.

Then I thought, ok it will be tied after this hole. Then Harrington proceed to do something no golfer ever wants to see another do. Completely collapse on a single hole and post a snowman. A 4 shot swing in one hole that sealed the deal for Tiger and left Padraig asking what if.

If you ever want to do some light reading. Go to Tigers website http://web.tigerwoods.com/aboutTiger/chronology and read his timeline of golf. This man has done almost everything possible in golf and when he passes Jack for career major victories and then Sam Snead for career PGA Tour victories. What else is there for him to do except win all four majors in the same calendar year. There are some records that even Tiger will never break because of the difference between then and now like Byron Nelsons records of 11 straight victories, 18 victories in a single season, 24 victires in 2 straight seasons and 32 victories in three seasons.

But those aside, Tiger will most likely own every major record in golf history when he finally retires from the sport. Considering he is only 33 years old and has the prime of his career ahead of him, I am not sure he won't hold them all.

You have to watch him at this point or your just not a fan of sports. Tiger Woods is making history everytime he steps on the golf course and I for one want to watch the greatest player to ever play the game while I can.

GO TIGER!

I Love Hawaii

Hawaii is one of my favorite places on the planet. Tiger entered Sundays round with a one shot lead and proceeded to stretch it to a three shot victory.

Tiger is now 47 of 50 when starting the final round with a lead and only one of those 3 loses is during a PGA event. Will Tiger be the first player in history to win 100 events? He is only 33 years old (34 in December) and has been a tour player since august 1996. The Victory on Sunday in the Buick Open was his 69th career victory as a professional, that's 5.3 victories per season! If Tiger can keep that pace up, he will have 100 career victories just before his 40th birthday.

Don't forget about his major victories. Tiger is currently 2nd in major victories only 3 behind Jack Nicklaus. That will no doubt change as well.

We should consider ourselves lucky to be living in a time when the greatest player in history is rewriting history every weekend. Sit back and enjoy the ride, it's going to be something to see.

Scotty Cameron Headcovers

For those of you who do not follow such things. Tom Watson lost on the final hole of the 2009 British open after hitting a near perfect drive and then doing what so many of us have done before. Hit a shot too good. His emotions were ramped up and so was his adreneline. The 8 iron from 165 yards carried just a little too far and rolled over the green. Coming inches from stopping in a position where a par for the win would have most likely been assured. Instead we watched as the chip from below the green rolled 8 feet by and then in agony as the putt to win the British Open slipped below the hole.

After that, Tom Watson had nothing left to give the golf gods and the 4 hole playoff was a route. It was a difficult thing to watch but something that I am glad I stayed tuned in for because I got to see something that in todays world you don't see very often. A Gentleman losing in front of the whole world and acting like a gentleman playing a gentlemans game.

Sportsmanship and good behavior are things of the past in professional sports and are quickly becoming absent from our high school and youth sports. Todays youth model their behavior after the players they see on tv and most of the time that behavior is poor. Todays biggest star in golf, Tiger Woods is often seen slamming his club into the ground and uttering 4 letter words during his rounds. Stars from the NBA, NFL and other sports throw fits, swear and worse.

Tom Watson in losing the British Open may have given us the best example of how an athlete is suppose to behave at all times. With Class and Respect for others. I wish more athletes both young and old could learn to behave like a gentleman and learn good sportsmanship. Thanks Tom for all you have taught us.

The British Open

Can Tom Watson close it out tomorrow in the British Open? This would be one of the greatest stories in golf since Francis Ouimet beat Harry Vardon and Ted Ray to win the 1913 US Open. But with a slight twist. This time it is the season veteran who everyone said was past his prime taking on the young guns of the sport.

I have been a fan of Watson since I first began watching him play as a kid. I remember getting to see him in some events as a kid and heard stories of how good he was at Stanford from Bob Allard who played against him at Oregon State.

Good Luck Tom, I think I am safe in saying that most of the golfing world will be pulling for you on Sunday.

US Open Week

Its monday of US Open week and the key players are positioned for a run at the crown. Tiger is playing well having taken last week off to prepare and coming off a victory at the Memorial. Phil is back but can he keep his focus given the problems at home. Kenny Perry is on his game again. It should be a very interesting week and play starts thursday. If only Payne Stewart where still here.
